What Makes Dirt Oval RC Racing a Lifelong Passion?
Dirt oval is an ever-changing sport. No one car wins every time. That unpredictability is part of what keeps me coming back. It forces you to keep improving, keep thinking, and keep adapting. Thereâs always something to tweak, something to test, and something to learn.
It is one of the most complex forms of RC racing. Youâre constantly chasing the track with your setup. The surface changes throughout the day (sometimes drastically) and you have to predict where itâs heading and adjust your car accordingly. Once I started racing dirt oval RC tracks, I never looked back.
Starting RC Racing as a Kid
I got my start in RC at my grandfatherâs hobby shop, CnR Hobbies, in Milford, IL. Growing up around the shop shaped a lot of who I am today and started my lifelong passion for RC and RC racing. My very first RC was a Duratrax Evader ST, and I raced it on the dirt oval with all the other rookies at the track. I still remember lining up for those races, nervous and excited at the same time. There was something about the sound of the motors, the smell of the dirt, and the competition that just hooked me immediately.
In the mid-2000s, my grandfather made the tough decision to sell the business and the building. That was hard on all of us. But a family friend got my dad and me back into RC racing after we took a break from it. Racing became part of my routine again, and it felt like coming home.
Now, I get to take my son to the track every chance we get. Family is everything to me, and RC racing has become something we get to share together. Watching my son experience the same excitement I felt at his age is something I canât really put into words. Itâs special in a way that only people whoâve grown up around RC racing truly understand.
What Iâve Learned from Racing the Dirt Oval
Itâs all about adapting. You need to understand how the track will develop as it dries out or takes rubber. You have to tune your setup to match those changes before they happen, not after. Tires are another huge factor. Knowing how to prep them and maximize the grip they can give you can be the difference between winning and missing the main. The speed at which you can go from having the best race day ever to having the absolute worst is honestly one of the most exciting parts of it. It keeps you humble and always learning.
But what really keeps me involved in RC racing is the friendships. The bonds you build at the track are real. Youâre connected by something you both genuinely love. Thereâs always someone willing to dive deep into the details and âget nerdyâ about toy cars with you. One of the kids I started racing with at my grandfatherâs track is someone I still race with today, along with his dad. Thatâs a lifelong friendship that started because of RC. Thatâs pretty special. Every time I go to the track, I try to make new connections and keep building that community.
At the end of the day, RC has been a constant in my life. It started at my grandfatherâs shop, grew through friendships and competition, and now continues with my own son by my side. Itâs more than racing. Itâs family, friendships, creativity, and constant learning all wrapped into one. And I wouldnât trade that for anything.
