Yes the receiver is a separate electronic item it's required for all models. BNF and RTF models include a receiver, PNP and ARF models do not. The receiver is the electronic 'brain' of the model, it receives signals from the transmitter to control the model.
A suitable Spektrum receiver for this model would be the AR631.
FMS recommends 4S only. 6S will require component upgrades.
