HO SD45-2, NS/EL Heritage #1700

Athearn - ATHG65715

HO SD45-2, NS/EL Heritage #1700 Overview

The former EL 3669, NS 1700 was repainted into Erie Lackawanna Heritage paint at Chattanooga, TN, in September 2015. The unit continues to operate today and has been seen from Ohio to New Jersey, often running with other 170X series units

Rebuilt with 16-cylinder engines, these former EL units are still earning their keep on today's Norfolk Southern. The units retain their distinctive 5000 gallon fuel tanks and are often seen running in pairs.

The SD45-2 was an initial success; it was a complete improvement or upgrade as part of EMD's "Dash 2" line; it had little to almost absolutely no flaws during the early stages of production and during the model's official introduction. It was both popular and compatible with the original SD45 as well, with its large 20-cylinder engine. The SD45-2 lasted somewhat longer than most SD45 units on various owners' rosters.
