By 1996, production of the P40DC was replaced by the P42DC. Amtrak took delivery of over 200 units and placed them in service to ultimately replace the aging and tired EMD F40 fleet. Horsepower was increased from 4000 to 4250. Many P40DCâs were upgraded to P42DC standards by the late 2000âs. Several units were painted in a special version of the Phase IV scheme with a dark grey roof, and assigned to service on the Northeast Corridor.
