The Missouri Pacific Railroad (MP) began acquiring EMD GP38-2 locomotives in 1972, purchasing a large fleet to handle a wide variety of freight assignments across its system. In 1980, the railroad expanded its roster by acquiring additional secondhand GP38-2 locomotives that had originally been built for the financially troubled Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad. These locomotives were repainted into Missouri Pacific’s distinctive “Jenks Blue” livery and became integral members of the railroad’s four-axle diesel fleet.
