The Good Old-Fashioned RC Fun Fly: A Welcoming Experience for Radio Control Enthusiasts

Now is the best time to start planning an RC Fun Fly. In the radio control (RC) hobby community, Fun Fly events offer an incredible experience for enthusiasts. Unlike specialized contests, RC Fun Flies welcome pilots with aircraft of all types and sizes. These events are designed to accommodate participants with basic skills while challenging those with advanced abilities.

Fun Flies are known for their inclusive nature, welcoming newcomers with trainer planes as well as experienced pilots with competition-grade aircraft. It’s great to see friends from other clubs, learn about different kinds of models you didn’t fly yourself, and meet talented pilots who flew other types of specialty aircraft you hadn’t seen before. Some participants even build specialized Fun Fly planes that are lightweight, overpowered, and equipped with large control surfaces for optimal performance.

If you are planning on creating a Fun Fly event with your club or hobby retailer, the following are a few of the more popular Fun Fly games you can incorporate into your event.

  • Limbo - Pilots navigate their RC aircraft through a timed course, flying under a ribbon or light material.
  • Spot-Landings - This precision event challenges pilots to land their aircraft in designated areas, often incorporating point systems or multipliers.
  • Target Drops - Participants drop brightly colored objects onto targets, sometimes combined with spot-landing zones.
  • Roll of the Dice - Pilots perform a series of maneuvers determined by dice rolls, adding an element of chance to the competition.
  • Time and Glide - Contestants aim to keep their aircraft aloft for the longest time after a set powered flight duration.
  • Combat - Pilots attempt to cut streamers attached to other aircraft, with the last intact streamer winning.
  • Drag Racing - Side-by-side racing of RC aircraft, with variations like STOL (Short Take-Off and Landing) drag races. RC helicopters make crazy fast drag racing machines.
  • Team Events and Modern Twists - Fun Flies can incorporate team events, relay races, and creative challenges that blend traditional RC flying with modern technology. For example, organizers might include events for drone racers, helicopter pilots, or even surface RC enthusiasts.

To breathe new life into Fun Fly events, consider:

  1. Incorporating wild card multipliers to level the playing field between different aircraft types.
  2. Designing events that showcase new RC technologies, such as FPV (First Person View) flying.
  3. Creating team-based challenges that combine various RC disciplines.

Try to think of ways to include hobbyists you don’t usually fly with or include some events for surface folks who might want to join the fun as well. What can you do to include drone racers? Helicopter pilots? Sailplane pilots? Rock crawling enthusiasts? Fun Fly events help spread growth across many radio control hobby areas because they allow hobbyists to see a variety of models for both air and surface.

By creating and reimagining the RC Fun Fly format, organizers can attract a new generation of hobbyists while preserving the inclusive and enjoyable spirit that makes these events so special.

There are millions of ways to create a Fun Fly. What will yours be?
