Overview

The Twist 3D 40 ARF from Hangar 9® is the most fun you can have at the flying field without getting arrested. An exciting .40-size plane capable of both sport and extreme 3D performance and an excellent, unintimidating fun flyer to putter with on the weekends, the Twist is constructed from sturdy, lightweight balsa and plywood, and looks super-cool with its bold yellow UltraCote® trim scheme with contrasting accents. Best of all, the Twist, with its deep bevels for extreme 3D throw and counter-balanced rudder and elevators, provides plenty of aerobatic thrills.

For instance, the light wing loading and oversized control surfaces allow for incredible 3D maneuvers. From hovers to harriers, knife-edge loops to climbing flat spins, the Twist can handle just about any aerobatic maneuver thrown its direction. Using a Saito™ .72, the Twist can run tight ten-foot loops and—unlike some fun-fly planes—full-throttle high-speed runs. It’ll hover and torque-roll down to head high. On low rates with low power settings, the Twist demonstrates stable slow-speed characteristics and very gentle stalls.

For convenient storage and transport to the flying field, the wing removes quickly and easily. The tail-mounted servos offer short and stiff linkages. And the Twist can easily be adapted to electric power, using a Hacker brushless motor and the enclosed installation instructions.

Detailed Information

"The Twist is a great blend of Sunday sport model and 3D performer. It's a simple rip-around aerobat that's great for almost any sport modeler wanting to do some loops and rolls, yet crank up the throws and it's a very capable 3D model as well. My hope is that it'll let more modelers try their hand at 3D."

FAQs

Product Support Tips

What servos should I choose?

Standard servos are more than adequate for the plane. But keep in mind that the better servos you use, the better the plane will fly.

What radio system should I choose?

You can use any 4-channel radio system or above.

What prop works well with the Saito 72?

An APC 14-4 wide blade, part number APC14040W, works very well.

What engine should I choose?

Choose the lightest weight, highest power engine you can find, within the engine recommendations. The Saito 72 or 82 are each a very good choice for this plane.

Section 1: Attaching the Wing to the Fuselage

Step 1

To prevent the dowels from “burning” themselves from vibration etc, lightly coat the dowel with thin CA, let the CA dry, and sand smooth with 600 grit sandpaper or similar. You will need to use only enough CA to cover the surface of the dowel. You do not want to increase the diameter of the dowel with the CA. Let it dry completely before sanding the dowel smooth.

Section 2: Installing the Horizontal Stabilizer

Step 5

Pay special attention to the cautions in the manual, which mention not pressing hard with the knife when removing the covering from horizontal stabilizer. If it is cut to deep, it will fail.

Section 3: Installing the Vertical Stabilizer

You can perform this section at the same time as installing the Horizontal Stabilizer to speed up assembly and provide a better bond between the horizontal and vertical stabilizers.

Step 4

Use care not to press hard with the knife when removing the covering from vertical stabilizer. If it is cut to deep, it will fail.

Section 8A: Engine Installation

For the Saito 72 engine and similar engines, it will be necessary to rotate the carb 180 degrees, do this by removing the 2 screws that hold the carb on the backplate of the engine, rotate the intake manifold, rotate the carb 180 degrees, rotate the intake manifold back into position and re-install the 2 carb screws.

Section 9: Throttle Pushrod Installation

For the Satio 72, I ran the pushrod above the tank and then down to the servo.

Section 14: Linkage Installation

Always install the servo such that the output shaft is towards the control surface.  Also be sure that you center the arm on the servo at 90 degrees to the servo, and install the control horns so that the holes in the control horn for the clevis line up with the hinge line for best performance.

Control Throws

Ignore the note on page 36 in the Control Throws section that states "Note: Aircraft is being tested. The correct throws and center of gravity will be added during layout."  This is a misprint.
