The DX8's powerful Spektrum AirWare software was developed exclusively by Spektrum from the ground up. This software includes all the programming functions an expert pilot could want, but you don't have to be an expert to use them. The DX8's intuitive Simple Scroll™ interface lets you "roll and click" your way between menus with ease. And all the information is presented in crisp, clear detail on a big, backlit LCD screen.
When programming the cyclic and pitch mixing for a helicopter, it is possible for the sum of the two mixing values to exceed the mechanical travel limits of the servos. This can cause them to be overdriven into a locked position. Spektrum AirWare's Electronic E-Ring prevents this by automatically limiting servo travel if the sum of the cyclic and pitch values exceeds servo limits.
Fine tune rotor speed and gyro gain while in flight using trim switches you assign.
When selecting a wing type for an airplane, Spektrum AirWare graphically depicts the type you've chosen and will automatically configure the necessary mixes for the pilot. This saves time and reduces the chances for error when programming complex control surface configurations.
The DX8's built-in telemetry feature (Telemetry Module Sold Separately) gives you vital, real-time information about what's happening with your model in flight; information that can prevent crashes and maximize performance. The telemetry data appears in an easy-to-read format on the large backlit LCD screen so you can reference it at a glance. You can also have the DX8 alert you with an audio or vibe alarm whenever any telemetry values exceed limits you define. The DX8 will initially be able to track four key safety and performance factors:
Never again will you have to wonder whether or not you have enough voltage to keep flying. Being able to monitor voltage will also help you detect a worn out battery pack before it prematurely ends your flight. The telemetry module is plugged into the receiver and will automatically relay receiver voltage. A separate sensor for tracking main battery voltage in electric aircraft will be included.
Is there enough airflow reaching an electric motor? Is my battery getting too hot? With the DX8, you will get real-time answers and be able to take action well before damage occurs. One temperature sensor is included.
Beyond new software and telemetry (requires Telemetry Module), the DX8 is also the first Spektrum radio to introduce the Spektrum Data Interface™. The SDI is designed for use with standard SD memory cards* and adds a whole new level of flexibility and ease-of-use. With the SDI, you will be able to:
Share setups with other DX8 owners at the field or transfer them from your SD card to your PC and attach them to an e-mail. This makes it easy to gain from the experience of others or help others succeed.
The DX8 has enough on-board memory for up to 30 models before you even need to think about using the SDI. But with the SDI, memory for thousands of models could be stored on the SD card or transferred to a PC hard drive for backup.
With the Spektrum Data Interface, you won't have to send your DX8 into a service center to get the latest Spektrum AirWare enhancements. You can download them onto your SD card and upload them to the DX8 yourself.
*SD card not included.
The DX8's weight distribution and ergonomics have been optimized to fit the way you fly. The result is a sense of balance and comfort that perfectly complements the speed and precision of DSMX® technology. Some of the more notable features include:
Receiver
Servos
Telemetry Module
Telemetry Sensors

Spektrum receivers are compatible with most popular speed controls and servos on the market.
DSM or Digital Spectrum Modulation is Spektrum's proprietary method of implementing 2.4GHz spread spectrum technology for the R/C industry. DSM divides the 2.4GHz band into 80 individual channels (frequencies) and incorporates direct sequence spread spectrum with an embedded GUID (Globally Unique Identifier) code. DSM has been painstakingly optimized by our engineers for RC surface and aircraft use, offering the most robust RF link in the industry.
DSM2 is the 2nd generation of Spektrum DSM technology and remains a premier 2.4GHz choice even today. Using the same superior wideband DSSS foundation that all Spektrum technology is based on, DSM2 consistently provides faster response and more precision than most non-DSM 2.4GHz protocols.
DSMX is a natural evolution of DSM2 technology that is the result of several years of development, optimized for pilots and combining Wideband DSSS and Frequency Agility. It builds on what has come before and takes DSM to the next level of robustness, reliability and efficiency without leaving current DSM2 users behind. DSMX represents the world's first wideband, frequency-agile 2.4GHz signal protocol and the most advanced spread spectrum RC technology to date.
These systems usually transmit a narrow band signal and rapidly jump through a fixed set of frequencies, spending a few milliseconds on each frequency.
The foundation DSMX is built on is the same foundation as DSM2™ - the superior on-channel interference resistance and coding gain of wideband DSSS. Compared to the wideband signal of a DSM2 or DSMX™ system, the narrow-band signal of other 2.4 transmitters is more likely to suffer crucial data loss in the event of on-channel interference. Think of wideband 2.4 as a river and narrow-band 2.4 as a stream. It takes much more interference to stop a river than it does to stop a stream.
The big reason wideband is so robust is coding gain. Essentially what this means is that the unique coding in a DSM2 or DSMX wideband signal allows it to be heard well above the noise of surrounding 2.4GHz signals without requiring any more power. In fact, a Spektrum wideband signal can achieve as much as 3X the range of its narrow-band competition using the same amount of power.
For the most part, yes. DSM2 transmitters are forward compatible with DSMX receivers and DSMX transmitters are backward compatible with DSM2 receivers. And because DSM2 and DSMX share the same wideband DSSS foundation, all Spektrum users will enjoy superior range, speed and precision whether they're using DSM2 equipment, DSMX equipment or a combination of both. The only exception is the DXe which is DSMX-only and not compatible with DSM2 receivers.
Yes, but DSM2 users who rarely, if ever, fly in big events or other "noisy" 2.4GHz environments may find the DSM2 equipment they have now is all they will ever need. The difference DSMX makes is only apparent when hundreds of 2.4GHz systems are in use at once. To see if your transmitter is eligible for the DSMX add-on, please visit horizonhobby.com, click on the “radios” tab, and select “DSMX addons” for more details.
A safety feature that prevents a pilot from flying a model when the model selected in the radio is not correct.
A resequencing of the data a Spektrum transmitter transmits based on the type of mixing you select. This feature helps to sync control services that are connected (such as a swash plate on a helicopter) and is used in radios that have many channels.
The Spektrum™ X-Plus™ 8 module lets you add 8 fully proportional channels to specially equipped Spektrum transmitters and receivers with 10 or more proportional channels. Just plug it into the X-Plus port of a compatible receiver. It is ideal for scale modelers who like to push realism to the extreme with working accessories and lights in addition to the regular control functions. The DX10t and DX18 offer X-Plus.
You should have no problem maintaining control as long as you maintain direct line-of-sight with your model. If you try to fly behind a group of trees or otherwise obstruct your direct line-of-sight, you could be susceptible to losing your control link.
