Programmable Voice Alerts

With voice alerts, you can keep tabs on important functions without ever taking your eyes off what you’re flying. They can be programmed to call out what flight mode you’ve chosen or report telemetry information on demand. If an alarm goes off, you won’t have to look at the transmitter display to see what’s happening. The transmitter will tell you.

Pro-Class Programming for Sailplanes

In addition to extensive airplane and heli programming, the DX18 has the most impressive sailplane programming features you'll find in any handheld transmitter. Ten available flight modes, 5 wing types, 3 tail types, 2 motor types, flap delay with elevator compensation-it has it all. You even have the ability to adjust individual servo characteristics (end points, travel, center, etc.) for all 18 channels.

Built-In Sequencer

Program a sequence of switch-activated events with time delays between each event. For instance, with a flip of the gear switch you could have an auxiliary channel open landing gear doors, then have the retract channel lower the landing gear, followed by the auxiliary channel closing the gear doors after the gear is extended.

Built-In Servo Balancer

No more will you need a complicated network of little boxes littering your fuselage if you want to balance servos. You can precisely balance the output of swashplate servos or multiple servos on a single control surface with the transmitter using a 7-point curve mix.

Wireless Trainer Link

The wireless trainer link gives instructors the option to wirelessly "buddy box" with another DSM2®/DSMX® transmitter. Once bound to another transmitter, ModelMatch™ technology will allow the DX18 to re-link without having to go through the bind process again.

250 Model Memory

The enormous capacity of the DX18's on-board memory means you will rarely, if ever, need to juggle models between transmitter memory and your SD card. The model memory menu is easier to navigate too. Only memory slots with model settings saved to them will appear. You won't have to scroll through empty slots or move models around if one is deleted.

Because the DX18 Gen 2 uses the same software platform as the DX6 Gen 2, DX7 Gen 2 and DX9, you can share model setups with owners of those transmitters as well.

Max Out Your Functions.

Both the DX18 and the AR9020 receiver it comes with have X-Plus™ channel expansion capabilities. This means you can add up to eight extra channels with an X-Plus channel expansion module (SPMXP8000 – sold separately). Just plug the module into the receiver, bind it and then assign the extra channels to any function you want.

Fly Smarter with Built-in Telemetry.

Built-in telemetry gives you real-time information on things like your model's battery voltage, signal quality, engine or motor temperature, airspeed, altitude and more. You can have the DX18 recite this information on demand using the programmable voice alerts. You also have the option of logging telemetry data to the transmitter’s SD card for review after the flight.

A Spektrum TM1000 telemetry module and telemetry sensors (all sold separately) are required. You will find there are Spektrum telemetry sensors for tracking just about any model function you can think of, and new ones are being added all the time.

What is DSM?

DSM or Digital Spectrum Modulation is Spektrum's proprietary method of implementing 2.4GHz spread spectrum technology for the R/C industry. DSM divides the 2.4GHz band into 80 individual channels (frequencies) and incorporates direct sequence spread spectrum with an embedded GUID (Globally Unique Identifier) code. DSM has been painstakingly optimized by our engineers for RC surface and aircraft use, offering the most robust RF link in the industry.

What is DSM2?

DSM2 is the 2nd generation of Spektrum DSM technology and remains a premier 2.4GHz choice even today. Using the same superior wideband DSSS foundation that all Spektrum technology is based on, DSM2 consistently provides faster response and more precision than most non-DSM 2.4GHz protocols.

What is DSMX?

DSMX is a natural evolution of DSM2 technology that is the result of several years of development, optimized for pilots and combining Wideband DSSS and Frequency Agility. It builds on what has come before and takes DSM to the next level of robustness, reliability and efficiency without leaving current DSM2 users behind. DSMX represents the world's first wideband, frequency-agile 2.4GHz signal protocol and the most advanced spread spectrum RC technology to date.

What is Frequency Agility?

These systems usually transmit a narrow band signal and rapidly jump through a fixed set of frequencies, spending a few milliseconds on each frequency.

What is Wideband DSSS?

The foundation DSMX is built on is the same foundation as DSM2™ - the superior on-channel interference resistance and coding gain of wideband DSSS. Compared to the wideband signal of a DSM2 or DSMX™ system, the narrow-band signal of other 2.4 transmitters is more likely to suffer crucial data loss in the event of on-channel interference. Think of wideband 2.4 as a river and narrow-band 2.4 as a stream. It takes much more interference to stop a river than it does to stop a stream.

The big reason wideband is so robust is coding gain. Essentially what this means is that the unique coding in a DSM2 or DSMX wideband signal allows it to be heard well above the noise of surrounding 2.4GHz signals without requiring any more power. In fact, a Spektrum wideband signal can achieve as much as 3X the range of its narrow-band competition using the same amount of power.

Are DSMX and DSM2 equipment compatible with each other

For the most part, yes. DSM2 transmitters are forward compatible with DSMX receivers and DSMX transmitters are backward compatible with DSM2 receivers. And because DSM2 and DSMX share the same wideband DSSS foundation, all Spektrum users will enjoy superior range, speed and precision whether they're using DSM2 equipment, DSMX equipment or a combination of both. The only exception is the DXe which is DSMX-only and not compatible with DSM2 receivers.

Are DSM2 transmitters eligible for a DSMX add-on?

Yes, but DSM2 users who rarely, if ever, fly in big events or other "noisy" 2.4GHz environments may find the DSM2 equipment they have now is all they will ever need. The difference DSMX makes is only apparent when hundreds of 2.4GHz systems are in use at once. To see if your transmitter is eligible for the DSMX add-on, please visit horizonhobby.com, click on the “radios” tab, and select “DSMX addons” for more details.

What is ModelMatch?

A safety feature that prevents a pilot from flying a model when the model selected in the radio is not correct.

What is Servo Sync?

A resequencing of the data a Spektrum transmitter transmits based on the type of mixing you select. This feature helps to sync control services that are connected (such as a swash plate on a helicopter) and is used in radios that have many channels.

What is X-Plus?

The Spektrum™ X-Plus™ 8 module lets you add 8 fully proportional channels to specially equipped Spektrum transmitters and receivers with 10 or more proportional channels. Just plug it into the X-Plus port of a compatible receiver. It is ideal for scale modelers who like to push realism to the extreme with working accessories and lights in addition to the regular control functions. The DX10t and DX18 offer X-Plus.

How much range can I expect out of my radio system?

You should have no problem maintaining control as long as you maintain direct line-of-sight with your model. If you try to fly behind a group of trees or otherwise obstruct your direct line-of-sight, you could be susceptible to losing your control link.

Can I change/shorten/lengthen the antenna on my Spektrum Receiver?

The length of the antenna is on a Spektrum receiver is set and tuned to optimize the range and performance of the receiver. We do not recommend altering the length of the antenna on any Spektrum Receiver.
