Review for Losi 3.4 carb on TRX 3.3 carburetor
Review by JV on 22 Jan 2021review stating Review for Losi 3.4 carb on TRX 3.3 carburetor
Traxxas 3.3/2.5 engine/carb isn't as bad as the cool kids say it to be. However, it is true that it leaves many users desiring more out of this RTR/basher engine.
When it was time to rebuild and "graduate" to bigger and better things, I tried a Losi 3.4 carb on a TRX 3.3. I wanted to see what the hype was all about.
THE DROP: The linkage arm did require some modifying for the Revo; just a little sanding, and it went in just fine. Additionally, it can appear that the carburetor will "stick," if it isn't linked to the vehicle just perfectly. As a result, it's almost a direct drop for your Revo, unlike the stock or OS 11-K carburetor.
OBSERVATIONS: Since it is a slightly larger carburetor, more fuel can enter the motor when needed. This is a nice plus, because the TRX3.3/2.5 carb is smaller; making it more susceptible to contamination and blockage. The contamination and blockage leads to running lean and possible engine when if the user does not monitor temperatures/running conditions. I believe this is how many new TRX 3.3 users can get into trouble with these engines and want to jump ship.
Since it has more opportunity to create better flow of fuel to the engine, it's easier to tune the 3.4 Carburetor on a TRX3.3 than with the stock Traxxas Carburetor. This led to a more enjoyable and predictable experience for me.
I can't say that the overall performance of the engine itself was significant, though.
CONCLUSION 1. Pretty easy drop for the Revo 3.3. 2. A little easier to tune than the Traxxas Carburetor. Easier to tune the idle/low/mid range, leading to safer temperatures. 3. Desirable change in performance when when used in TRX 3.3 engine. Can't say it was significant.
